MAKEUP ARTISTS

Optional Certification for Makeup Artists

Current and new practitioners will have the OPTION to obtain certification as a Makeup Artist. (precedence set with the massage therapists)

The Department of Consumer Affairs, Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) is uniquely capable at very little administrative impact or expense to add & implement certification for Makeup Artists. For those wishing to get certified the path will be as follows:

  • New Applicants

    Applicants for certification may continue to self-teach or apprentice to gain the necessary experience to become certified through grand fathering. They may also attend an approved BPPE / Board institution & successfully complete all the educational requirements and testing as prescribed by BBC.

  • Apprenticing

    Those wishing to obtain certification through apprenticing must successfully complete an apprenticeship period under the guidance of a Master Makeup Artist and successfully complete a 40-hour course on safety health and sanitation at a state approved makeup school.

  • Grandfathering

    Is for industry veterans who meet the experience threshold requirements of 3 or more years, or belong to a Makeup artistry Union, or have previously attended a BPPE approved makeup artistry that lead to a diploma in Makeup Artistry. They are able to get certified if they choose to and have a desire to work in areas currently not permitted. Those who have less than the required experience threshold but have completed a 16 hours educational class at a BPPE approved school.
