Certification is optional and you may want to become certified if you want to expand your employment opportunities. Certification will allow artists who are not cosmetologists or estheticians to legally work in salons, spas, and weddings.

Upon the passing and becoming law proposed legislation would allow the Board Of Barbering and Cosmetology to issue a certificate to those wishing to be certified, meet the eligibility requirements and pay the initial certificate fee of forty five dollars($45).

QWho is eligible to apply for certification?
You are eligible for certification if you meet any of the following requirements:
- Completed a course in makeup artistry from a school approved by the board.
- Completed the apprenticeship program in makeup artistry specified in Article 4 (commencing with Business and Professions Code Section 7332).
- Belongs to a makeup artists' and hairstylists' union.
- Can provide documentation of at least three years of experience practicing makeup artistry. This includes dated tear sheets with the makeup artist's name credited, a valid dated membership with an industry organization, a license from the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education as a cosmetology or esthetician instructor, a diploma from a board-approved makeup school, or a certificate of experience from a licensed establishment. This eligibility clause will become inoperative 3 years from the date the legislation is passed.
- Can provide documentation of less than three years of experience practicing makeup artistry and completed 16 hours of practical training and technical instruction from a board-approved makeup artistry school. This eligibility clause will become inoperative 3 years from the date this legislation is passed

QI have not attended a Board Approved makeup school but have 3 years of provable work experience. Am I eligible for certification?
Yes.
QI have not attended a Board Approved makeup school and do not have 3 years of provable work experience. Am I eligible for certification?
Yes, upon completing a 80 hour course of technical instruction and practical training at a Board approved school.
QI attended a BPPE approved school in the past and successfully completed course work that lead to a Diploma in Makeup Artistry. Am I eligible for certification?
Yes.
QI am an entertainment Makeup Artist but do not belong to the Union. Am I eligible for certification.?
Yes, by meeting the experience requirements.
